Too quiet

by Dawn @, Friday, March 27, 2009, 08:17

Okay, let me just say this. It is way too quiet on this message board. I check it several times a day, and NOTHING is posted. So I thought I would offer to email patterns from my Japanese book if anyone wants something special. I also have a WIDE variety of other patterns, and my just try and make legible patterns of my ornament covers. So if any one is interested let me know, and please for goodness sake start using the message board again!

This doesn't mean you Lucy and Felicia since you have kept me updated on the animal page and via email!

Quiet is a good word for it. I can see the tumbleweed blowing across the screen. I guess everybody's busy with something! I do find the bustle waxes and wanes every so often. As for me, this month was a bad one because I'm doing my hospital placement. It's pretty rough, but next week it will be over! YAY! Don't worry, April will be a much busier month pattern-wise.

I'd love to give it a go. Do you have a pattern for a quite simple one?

Dawn, your ornament is gorgeous!! Your eye for colour matching is so precise. That's an art in and of itself, let alone the design of the beads. I bet designing that took even longer than making it. We'd love to see an ornament pattern!

Allegra,

You are right the color combinations and the planning took longer than the actual beading, of course that is saying something since that creation took me at least 4 times as long as any other I have done!

Peyote Anguish

by Allegra ⌂ @, Toronto, Canada, Sunday, March 29, 2009, 22:16 @ Lucy

Well, I'm trying my second ever peyote stitch beadwork (a flat peyote 6 bead wide bracelet stitched in gold-coloured size 11 seed beads). The colour is phenomenal, but the shape, don't get me started! It's wider in parts then goes narrower, totally uneven. There must be a secret to getting perfectly even peyote! If anyone has any advice, I'd love to hear it! I'm trying to cull even beads, but it's still going snake-like wide and narrow. I think it might be my tension. I've bought myself a beading needle set from Michael's (size 12, thanks for the advice Jax), and it is going through the beads nicely, but the stitch work has only degraded in quality since I started using the needle instead of my hands to string the beads!

Allegra,

Peyote is a yucky stitch! Not really, it is just tricky! It has to be done with cylinder beads also known as Delica beads. These beads are uniform in size and shape and make it look a lot better. I can't get Peyote to work without them with the Delicas----lovely. Here is a small peyote basket made with Nymo and cylinder beads (that's all folks)

I love peyote but Allegra already knows that. I have never used delica's. I use Japanese cylinder beads for all of my peyote and they work fine. I have to do a little culling but they are way cheaper then the Delica's. I am betting your tension is part of the issue and that just takes practice. Some of my first bracelets are wacky shaped but I guess that is the plus side of having kids, they love it no matter what! Are you using your fishing line for this? If you are, that may contributiing to your tension problem. A picture may help us diagnose your issue, lol.

Dawn, your basket is lovely! Really good eye for colour schemes! It must take so much planning!

Yes, Jax, you know me so well. I use fishing line for every project. LOL! I don't have the heart to spend over 20 dollars on a spool of fireline when my fishing line is under 5 dollars for the same amount. LOL! Does the fireline work well for peyote? I suppose I could just buy one spool and save it for peyote. Right angle weave is much more forgiving.

I'm almost done my bracelet, and I will most certainly post a picture of it when it's done! I'm doing a peyote gold-beaded 6 bead wide strap, wrapped in crochet gold-coloured wire, consisting of two strands, one with brown shiny seed beads meshed in the wire, one without (for asymmetry). And to hold the wire onto the band of gold seed beads, I'm going to do a fringe of gold seed beads topped with amethyst-coloured gemstone chips. Anyways, that's how it looks in my mind. I've already made the wire strands (with the spooling technique..not sure of the name, but you use a wooden spool with 4 nails hammered into it and work around the nails and through the central hole), and about half the peyote band. If it looks atrocious, I might have to abort the project. LOL!

Allegra, I'm sure it's just a matter of practice. I just use fishing line, a very fine one that goes through the beading needles. And I just use the cheapo beads, they usually need a bit of culling though. I think because you're such an expert at right angle weave, that this is just a different way of doing things. But practise will get it for you. I found this which shows the different types of beads http://reviews.ebay.co.uk/What-apos-s-a-Seed-Bead_W0QQugidZ10000000001651817?ssPageName... I just use cheapo czech types. And there's this that shows the difference in peyote http://www.beadwrangler.com/samplers/peyote1/making_peyote_samples1.htm. Obviously it's a much more even stitch when using the delicas, but I actually like the more irregular look of the czechs.

I forgot to say your latest project sounds incredible. I thought you couldn't crochet. Or did you mean the french knitting, with the nails and spool. I've done the french knitting with wire, it's a great look, I forgot all about it, I'll have to do some more. And the crocheted wire is amazing, you can add beads here and there and do all sorts of things with it. I can't wait to see your photo. I just can't quite picture it.

I always use NYMO myself and wide eye (or big eye) needles. When I want the peyote to look straight and even I use the cylinder beads. Sometimes I will use my Czech beads, but since I am a perfectionist I am usually not as happy with the result. And I definitely agree cylinder beads are way cheaper than Delicas, but I have heard sometimes they go by the same name....kinda like Frigidaire (or am I dating myself again?):-)

I use nymo too. It is just a nylon thread. I think your fishing line may be to thick and that can affect the outcome of your project. Delica is not an interchangeable word. I think that someone selling non delica beads as delica's could get into some trouble for it. I would avoid buying from anyone that did that because you would be getting ripped off buying Japanese beads at the Delica price.

Hi Bipa.

I just love these frogs,I am always scouting around craft shops in different towns looking for faces for them,I still haven't found any.I down loaded this pattern just like this,I am sure if you save the image and enlarge it and use a magnifying glass you will be able to read the instructions.Or else print the instructions to A4 size.
