Your hello kitty dolls are TOO cute! Do you have any suggestions on where to learn the technique? It might be hard for some of our crochet naive visitors (and us!) to follow text patterns without some idea of what we are doing. Do you have prior experience?

Actually I'm just a beginner crocheter..... amigurumi are actually very
easy... you don't need any fancy stitches .. ....there are videos on Youtube that
show you how to start...and some basic techniques or you can check out
this site... it has more indept and step by step instruction..

They are lovely, you really should consider selling them.
How difficult are they to make? I've never tried crochet but these make me want to try!

Crocheting is one of my favorite crafts, I learnt when I was around 5, and I've done some really fancy doilies and tonnes of stuff.

I used to make little puppet animals, similar to these when my daughter was little.

These are great things for beginners to do, just a basic stitch, fairly easy to learn.

with amigurumi you don't have to be a crochet expert.... you're just working with one kind of stitch (single crochet) to decrease and increase stitches to make it round.

How big are each of these dolls when they're made? Do you crochet around an object, like a piece of cotton or something?

It may takes a couple of hours for you to make one, of course this all depends on how good/fast of a crocheter you are.
As far as the size of the hello kitty, I think it approx. 16/17 cm when completed. And you don't actually work around any objects,
you are crocheting a ball and then stuff it with cottons. In a way it very similiar to beading, you're making a bunches of balls and then sew them together.

If you watch the youtube videos, it would explain it better..I find them very helpful.

okie for anyone wanna try something a little easy I found a cute bird and a mushroom
cute little mushroom

bird pattern

for these two pattern instead of crocheting 6single crochet in the beginning you can do the magic ring instead...that way it doesn't leave a
hole later on.

Check out the site called Needle and hook a couple which I've linked awhile back.......it has a great tutorial for amigurumi.... from doing the magic ring/double ring (think that's what it called) to doing single crochet and increasing and decreasing stitches to give it forms. .. I also found watching the you tube videos on amigurumi is also very helpful.... its give you an idea of what your should look like. ...

Oh my gosh, the birds are SOOOO adorable!!! And the way she has posed them side by side in the 2nd picture especially, my goodness. They look so impossible. They are truly easy? Well, I guess 3D beading looks impossible too at a glance lol. All my friends keep saying I'm so "talented" for doing these 3D animals, and I keep telling them, talent has nothing to do with it, if you can follow a pattern you can do it LOL!

Is it faster than say cross stitching? I once started a cross stitch piece, not even 12 inches by 12 inches, I barely filled in a 2 by 2 inch space, after 2 weeks of working on it, and it has since been sitting in my drawer, for a couple of years now, LOL! It just takes too much patience! I think I finally gave up when I realized I had counted wrong the previous 20 rows or something, and I would have had to take about half of it apart to fix the mistake. OH which raises the question, is it easy to mess up in crochet? If you do mess up, is it easy to undo or fix?

Crocheting is much, much faster than cross-stitch, even for a beginner. It's also very easy to undo stitches in crochet. Give it a go Allegra, and anyone else, these are great easy patterns for a beginner.
