Well, I figured to make a little chat area to get to know all the fellow beaders and what everyone was up to. Hope to hear from you all soon.

LOL, you're sort of jumping the gun on my plans to make a beader profile matching system! That's okay, you know how slow I am. You'll all be best friends 10 times over before I get around to finishing any of my plans around here!!! Alas, to think this is my leisure activity. LOL!! Okay, enough self-pity.

Well, I guess I can start. My name is Allegra, I'm 22 years old, and I'm studying pharmacy at the university of Toronto, in Toronto, Canada. I've always liked art, but until very recently, my concept of art was very narrow. I envisioned art as basically either sketching or painting. Then, about 4 years ago, my friend made me a friendship bracelet for my birthday (it's November 4, by the way, if anyone wants to know :-P ). I was so impressed with it! I guess most people got over their friendship bracelet fad at a tender age, but I sort of skipped that era, and maybe for good reason, because you don't really appreciate intriguing art forms at that age anyway. So I really wanted to learn how to make it! She taught me, and so I was obsessed with that for a while, thinking it was the coolest thing ever until about 2 years ago... I was shopping in Chinatown when I passed by a unique little shop that was selling intricate 3-D beaded objects. I couldn't believe my eyes. I had beads in my closet that had been sitting there for the past 10 years, dating back to my childhood stringing fad. I really underestimated the power of beads, and while gazing upon her store, I felt like I had been hit by lightning. I felt so inspired! So much so that I made her teach me how to do it (she wasn't in the habit of instructing, just selling her beading projects). That evening, I went to buy all the beads off my local dollar store shelf, went to the hardware store to buy fishing line, and 2 months later, I started this website to share what I learned because I just thought it was oh so cool. Anyways, for the rest, in 1 year I will be a pharmacist (assuming I graduate), and my boyfriend is also in my class, and we will both one day open a pharmacy together hopefully! He used to be in computer science till he made the big leap of faith to drugs, so he's helping me out with the more hard-core aspects of running a website, plus he's hosting it for me (which is quite expensive!!), so lucky me!

I am glad you did this Tess and Allegra you are doing great. I am so impressed with what you have put into all this and I love this site. So my turn.
My name is Jackie but I go by Jax. I am 27, I have three kids. Two girls, Tori 11 and Jordan 5. My son Colby will be 8 in August. I have been married for 9 years and sometimes I can even coax my husband into beading with me, he has a few unfinished projects! I work full time and I did so for the last 18 months while I went thru an also full time LVN program. I just took my state boards this week so I hopefully have the results soon! My ultimate goal is to be a neonatal nurse and work in a NICU. My next step will be finishing up the second year of nursing and getting my RN.
I started beading when I was in middle school. My first project was a loom work bracelet in blue and black that said Jax and I did it without a real loom. I actually taped the string to the table and moved it closer in as I worked. My mom finally got me a real loom and I did a few more things but lost interest. I grew up in the Willamette Valley in Oregon but after two years of full time school, I couldn't get into a nursing program because they were so few and they all had huge waiting lists. So we moved to San Jose, California.
My neighbor in our first apartments after we moved, beads and sells her work at Yosemite National park where her sister teaches basket weaving. I finally talked her into teaching me peyote and a few other stitches and I was hooked again! That was about 4 years ago. I didn't get much beading done while I was in school because every spare minute was kids and studying but now that my boards are done, I will be beading much more! I am also looking forward to expanding my stash, right now it is 98% seed beads in size 11/0, and my techniques![image]

Hahaha, I can't even talk my boyfriend's sister into beading with me. You must have magical powers of persuasion to get your husband to do it!
I've never tried loomwork or peyote stitch before. I really want to learn though! Once I made a friendship bracelet that said "Allegra" on it. It took me 3 months, LOL!! Nowadays, I try to incorporate beads into my friendship bracelet patterns!!
It must be warm in California!!! We only dream of sunlight and warmth here!

Like I said, he has unfinished projects! My youngest likes to bead with me too but I never end up getting anything of my own done until I bought her a big box of pony beads. I would be happy to share some of our heat with you. Its been in the high 90's the last few days and I can't remember the last time it rained. It is such a big difference from Oregon where it was always rainy and dreary. Good luck with learning peyote. It is by far my favorite stitch! There is a step by step animated tutorial here that hopefully helps.

Wow, a fellow Torontonian beader!! So there are three Chinatowns in Toronto. There is one located at Dundas St. and Spadina St. That is where I get really cheap animal models (for 1 dollar each, but they only come in size 15 (smallest) seed beads, so they are harder to follow). They also sell the bigger ones for 4 dollars each, but only a few of them. Mainly they sell the 1 dollar tiny ones. At Kennedy Rd. and Steeles Ave. there is another Chinatown, and if you go to Pacific Mall, on the second floor of the mall there is a store where a lady works all day just making beaded animals, hearts, etc. But she's more expensive, pricing her models at around the $15-20 range, but her models are very big, clear and easy to follow. And she has a lot of variety, much more than Dundas and Spadina (which is a small store beside a restaurant, a bit south of the actual dundas and spadina intersection, along spadina). The third Chinatown in Toronto is at Broadview St. and Gerrard St. but I've never actually gone there to look for beaded models. Maybe I should try it! LOL!

Hey Allegra, I have to ask this because I am not sure why I keep ending up backwards as I am doing your patterns. Are you by chance left handed or am I just being completely backwards?

by Jax, Saturday, July 12, 2008, 14:16 @ Allegra

Yeah, more like mirror image I guess you would say, look at my kitty. I followed your pattern and my black face spot ended up on the opposite side. When I was doing the heart, I ended up turned around somewhere and was going down the wrong side. I discovered this on page 8 or 9 when I needed to go thru one of a group of four beads and my group of four beads was on the opposite side of where I was. Maybe I was just tired last night and crossed on the wrong side and that is why I ended up beading down the wrong side. I am going try again when I get home tonight and see if I can figure it out.

Hmmmm, I don't know why that would be! It might just be coincidence and not caused by anything in particular. How many beading patterns off this website have you done? Did you have the exact same problem with all of them? I'm wondering if it has to do with the fact that you are looking at a picture rather than the real thing. But I'm pretty sure the camera doesn't act like a mirror, it keeps the image in the same orientation as it was originally, as if you were looking right at the thing!

by TESS, Monday, July 14, 2008, 09:41 @ Allegra

Hello ladies. Wow!! I opened up this thread and forgot to even introduce myself. Geez :-P

Anywho, my name is Maritess Larson. But I go by Tess. I'm 27 and born on April 5th in Pandi Bulacan, Philippines. My family and I moved to Florida in 1991 due to Mt. Pinatubo's volcanic eruption. Then I moved myself to Minnesota in 2001 and lived here ever since. I've been engaged for 7 years and live with our female lab Franny (she's a pheasant-hunting machine), and my 2 adorable male cats Casper and Jimmy. Since 2005, I've been attending St. Cloud Tech College in pursuit of my AAS degree in Accounting. Though I don't know if I'm going to continue with that. I might switch majors and go into computer science. But not sure exactly so I've decided to take this year off of school and go back Fall 2009. For the past year or 2 I've been into Archery. Last fall was my first time participating in the Minnesota State Archery Shoots. I placed 7th at the Minnesota State Indoor Regional in the Female Freestyle class at Champion level with a score of 298-33X. Indoor Regional is a qualifying round for the Minnesota State Indoor Tournament. There I placed 6th at the same class and level with a score of 295-38X. I plan on entering more competitions next year. Hopefully, I'll be ready to enter the 2009 summer tournaments which are held outdoors. Okay, enough about me and my archery.

Tis is me. LOL!!!

I've started beading a long time ago, but didn't really get into it till about 2-3 years ago. I don't constantly or steadily do beadwork, but go through phases where that is all I do then I stop for awhile and then go back to it again. I've tried different types of beading styles a lot of the stuff I've done are basically jewelry type stuff, but after discovering Allegra's site. I thought it was awesome to be able to do bead projects outside of jewelry patterns. I've even gone to ebay and bought several Japanese beading books to work on. They are a bit complicated since I don't know Japanese but the photos and diagrams are pretty easy enough to decode and figure out what's going on. I'm just glad that they used real numbers which helps alot. So, I guess that's about it from me. Can't think of anything else to mention.

Step 1 on page 6, I picked up the piece to thread thru and again set it back down upside down. On the first piece I kept going, down the wrong side. I noticed what I did on the second piece and corrected it so now I have my heart!

by Laura, Friday, July 18, 2008, 03:30 @ Jax

I thought it was about time I added my 'profile' to this thread! So here goes...

My name is Laura and I'm a 21 year old student from England. I'm studying Molecular Biology but I'm currently on a 'year out' because of illness. You might notice that I sometimes 'disappear' from the site/forum every now and then for a few weeks or so. Don't worry though ;-) it's usually because I'm in hospital having intravenous antibiotics which is a regular thing for me. I have Cystic Fibrosis which means I get chest infections quite often. It's interfered with my studies quite a bit these last few years but hopefully I'll be able to get back into studying next year.

I currently live at home with my parents and sister (along with 2 Chow Chow dogs and 3 rabbits). :-)

I got into beading earlier this year - when I was in hospital actually. I found it really relaxing and it helped the days pass by more quickly as it's really boring sometimes when you're sat on your hospital bed all day!
I've never had much of an interest in making jewellery (necklaces, bracelets etc) so I was really glad to have found this site where I discovered how to make the beaded animals/hearts. (Thanks Allegra!) :-D

Any questions...? LOL! :-P

Ok, my real name is Marilyn Southmayd but I use the nickname GrandmaMarilyn because that is what all my sites are called. I did beading for the first time in the 80s. Then set it aside for other crafts. In 2005, I picked up my beading again to try to get some pocket money since we had lost everything that we owned. At the time, I did ornaments with wire, acrylic crystals and cheap seed beads. It allowed hubby and I the chance to go out once in a while and get something special or get some extra groceries for the house.

Now, I use Japanese seed beads and crystals to make jewelry to hopefully sell. I keep a photo album on Picasa to keep a working history of my work since 2005. I keep up a website, blog and 2 Etsy shops (GrandmaMarilyns and GrandmaMarilynsToo) to try to sell my work. I link my website to my Etsy shops. It takes a while to get all of the work done on them but hope it will be worth it in the future.

I am a stay at home wife, mother, and grandmother. Our household consists of me, my hubby (Walter), my daughter (Angelique), 2 grandchildren (Tommy and Anna), 6 dogs (5 chihuahuas and a peke), 2 turtles, and numerous fish. Thank goodness we have a large house (well, except for the cooling bill). We live in deep south Texas about 60 miles NE of Laredo.

That's not true!! LOL, maybe our mother. I was quite surprised myself that everyone on here was so young. I don't like to play into stereotypes, but I always imagined beaders to be either children stringing large plastic beads in string to make necklaces, or old women sitting together while sipping tea. Anyway, you're not old at all! My mother is older than you (don't tell her I told you!!)

Anyways, I know exactly what you mean about maintaining beading websites being hard work. This used to be my leisure activity after a long day's work. Now it's my work away from work! But I still enjoy it. There's nothing that brings me more joy than to see people coming together for a common purpose. I hope more people join your MSN group about beading! Hi Tandra! To post a picture of yourself and your beaded roses, simply hit "Post reply", then in the reply page, click the button that says "Image" which is located right above the typing box (immediately to the left of the smilies). When you've clicked the image button, you will get a popup window that asks you to click the "browse" button to browse your computer's files to find your image. Then click "upload" and your image will upload to the website. Then you will be told to click on your image thumbnail to insert it into your post. It's quite easy once you click the "image button" in the reply page. The popup will guide you on exactly what to do. I hope your browser allows popups from this site so you can do it! Try it!

We'd all love very much to see a picture of your beaded roses. Maybe one day you can try submitting a pattern of it to be posted on this site!

Kind regards,
Allegra

Hi.
I am from a little town in South Africa called Welverdiend,it is not even on the map,we only have one street with 5 shops.

I am very bored at the moment and was busy going through all the topics here to see what patterns people are looking for,I need to stay on the internet at the moment as I have to check my e.mails every 15 minutes, due to having to reply to e.mails to do with the sale of my sons motor bike.

My youngest son graduated last year as a Pharmacist,I hope all has gone well with your studies. My eldest son is married and has a 9 month baby boy and he is in the banking profession.I was very shocked to see how old I am when I started reading here and how young everybody else is,at least there were 2 people older than me.Anyhow my picture is at beading requests and I am 49 years old.

I have been running my own dress making business for 30 years and do all crafts that I sell through craft shops and Huistyvereid businesses on a commission basis.I only started serious beading 3 years ago,I have always done bead embroidery but never tried anything else with beads until my sister asked me what she could do in New Zealand to make money. She said beading sounded interesting,so what I did is started teaching myself and have then been sending her everything through the post and e.mailing her and teaching her how to bead,I have 1 Data disc left to send her on everything I have found over the internet, then I think she has everything to carry on,on her own.My final beading project gift to her was my Dragon, now she can carry on on her own,I think I have taught her as much as I can.

It is nice to meet everybody.

Vanessa.

by Lobo 1, Wednesday, September 24, 2008, 20:09 @ Tess

My screen name is Lobo 1.
I am a 54 year old male, born and still live in Ogden, Utah.
I am a veteran of the United States Army, retired woodworker, heavy equipment operator, lube engineer/ jack of all trades.
I have been beading for 8 years, I have made my own looms, graph papers, beadworks and patterns.
I make baskets of all sizes, jewelry, sun catchers, wall hangings, small tapestries and ornaments all out of beads.
In the past I have always given my beadwork away, but not my patterns, I have decide to share a few here on this site and see what happens, I hope they get posted soon.
I have beaded over 1,000 pieces and then made the patterns for them, I know this is backwards from what most people do, but it was the only way I had to start with, then when I was able to just use the graph paper to design on, I made to many mistakes so I went back to making the piece and then doing the pattern, that is why I say I have never used a pattern to make a piece, and as you might imagine there are very limited instructions for making my pieces, although I use mostly basic stitches.
About 6 months ago I discovered a free bead program that I now use to make patterns, also I have scanned all of my old patterns that I have onto my computer, and I am now in the process of redoing them with the bead program so that I will have the ability to print out the patterns with pictures in jpeg format and a word chart for each pattern, I could never redo each piece to photograph and submit to any site so I hope that I can get some exposure here and we will see what happens.
I hope you like my stuff as much as I like every thing I see.
I always close with this statement.

I live in Utah a state with a wide array of cultures.
My next door neighbor is a Native American from the Sioux Nation.
She say me beading through my dinning room window one night and came over and asked that same question, I told her that a freind had showed me a project that he was working on the loom and I was hooked.
He told he only did loomwork and I would have to make my own loom but he would give me a pattern, the rest as they say is history.
Anyway my neighbor showed me how to make the basket that night and she watched as I beaded and she told me that she learned a lot, and thanked me for being her neighbor.

Hi everyone
I said I would Post my graph papers.
Low and behold I just about depleted my stash but I was able to find clean copies of my Looom Graph and Peyote Graph that I made nearly 8 years ago on an IBM typewriter, using the o,O, 0.
I hope you like them, I could not have started to make patterns without these two.

Thank you so much for your quick response.
I left the site and came back not knowing what to expect and OMG
I know how difficult it is to make copies of things and get them out there, Thank you for your explanation of how they were made I can visualize them better now.
That was very clever to use a typewriter.

Hi everyone
I am sorry for the poor quality of my graph papers I scanned them and posted them in a hurry.
I was just looking over my last few posts, and I see that I missed a very impotant sign.
I had been misspelling words.
I guess I should have seen it coming, I had a stroke and was in the hospital for a few days.
The good news is it was minor, and they liked the fact that I was a seed beader and helped me with some visual aids and other therapy.
I might be able to get back to beading some projects in the not so distant future instead of just pattern making.
Lucky lucky me.
It looks like I missed all the excitement. Ha ha ha:-P

WOW, you've been beading for 34 years!! I can't believe it. I'm not even 34 years old. (22 years old). Wow. You must be an expert! Any tips for beading novices?

Hi again
An expert no.
I have never made a pattern and I only do Loom and Peyote and I'm not that good at finishing my projects, I still have trouble with attaching clasps just right.
When I said I started in the 70's that was true but I also have been a full time student through college, a full time wife and mother of four.
I wish I had of had the time to become an expert at something, I am just good at alot of stuff.
The only advise that I ever give is to respect other people for what they have done.

You scanned them right? Do you have the original scanned files still on your computer? You can email them to me and I'll post them in large size. The forum caps size on files posted so that there isn't any horizontal scrolling required on the page.

Okay I'm about to post some of your patterns. Sorry about the long wait! I've been very busy with school!

Wow your crystal bead baskets are very pretty!! Are they done the same way as the seed bead baskets?

Hi allegra
No the crystal bead basket is done with fishing line, and the small baskets are done with beading thread and a needle.
They are how ever strung the same way, but because of two things I would recomend that you use seed beads and neeedle and thread.
1. The fact that pi is an approximation and is relevent to the diameter of a circle, the size of the crystal beads, and the stiffness of the fishing line, don't lend itself to making larger baskets with more rows.
2. Seed beads and thread allows you to keep better tension and adjust your beads to make them lay right and the weave is pretty tight up to 14 rows.
That's why I don't recommend trying to make a large basket out of crystal beads and fishing line, unless you really want an open weave with gaps in your basket.

I hope this helps.

Oh, so fishing line isn't good for peyote stitch? I was wondering that myself. I tried making a peyote stitch piece with fishing line and it came out very awkward and bent out of shape. It was supposed to be flat, but ended up rather wavy. What kind of thread did you use? Do you wax it?

Hi allegra
The only fishing line that I have ever heard seed beaders say they use for any type of weaving stitch is fireline by berkley.
The red, black and white sample I e-mailed you was done with E-beads from walmart and 6lb fishing line, brand unknown in peyote stitch and it lays perfectly flat, I have it hanging on my rear view mirror and I get alot of comments on it.
I use nylon upholstry thread that I got when I took an upholstry class at our local community college in 1978, it came on a big spool I think 1,000 yards long, I had 3 spools of white, 6 spools of black and 2 spools of brown, when I started beading, I have just a little left of the black and that is all.
I hear that a product like silamide would be a good replacement now, or nymo.

WOW, you managed to use up several thousand yards of beading thread!! You must be OFTEN!! (as your signature implies lol). I'm still working on my first spool of fishing line, which is also 1000 yards. I've barely made a dent in it from the looks of it. LOL! And I've made all the beadworks pictured on this site (minus guest patterns and beading market galleries).

The nylon thread never snaps? Is it a strong thread? Is it easier to work with than ordinary fishing line?

I will post your other patterns soon. Sorry about the wait! I have just so many requests from all sides!! But this Christmas, I'm going to make a system where people can post their own stuff, which would be a win all around because your stuff would be posted faster and I would be able to have more time to post patterns!!

Thanks for being such a great supporter! I appreciate it!

I also use outdoor upholstery thread for beading. I get Coats and Clark water and UV resistant thread from Wal Mart in 200 yard spools for like $4 or $5. It comes in black, white, brown, navy blue, and olive drab. Well, that's all of the colors that our local store carries, this could vary from location to location. It has a 20 year warranty against rot and dryrot, so anything that is not exposed to the elements should last forever. The only problem that I have had is the fact that it is pretty thick and you can not make multiple passes in the smaller sized seed beads. You can't even get a needle with it through the very small size 15 seeds at all, so you can't do tiny stuff with it. I do a lot of bead embroidery and I use it faithfully and hven't had any issues. I simply use the color closest to the material(not the beads) that I am working on and it hides very well.

I have done a couple of woven pieces with 8lb test Spiderwire. It is a monofil fishing line, but it is very thin and the crystal clear literally disappears into your work. It also comes in smoke and a neon green color, but I haven't used them at all yet. Some say that it is just as good as the Fireline, some say it's about the same andothers swear by the Spiderwire, so opinions are varied far and wide. I've never used Fireline so I can't say for sure either way. All I can say is that the Spiderwire has done it's job well, just like it is supposed to on the pieces that I have made. I'm not sure of the yardage on the spool, but it was less than $10. The spool is like 4 inches in diameter, so there is a bunch on it. *laughz*

Jus' my 2 bits, ya know.

Wow, that's very informative! Thanks for sharing!! I use a brand of fishing line called Red Wolf. I read on the internet that it's got a reputation for being the "economy brand" of fishing line. LOL! I got 1000 yards of it for $3.97 from Canadian Tire. It's monofilament as well, but it has never failed me. Well, okay it has broken once or twice but only on very old pieces I had been wearing constantly for a year. It never breaks when newly beading a piece. I seriously doubt fireline is as perfect as everyone claims. I don't know how it got to have such an honoured reputation in the beading world. I guess maybe when beaders first adopted using fishing line to bead, someone picked it up off the shelf randomly and used it, and it worked out, so they recommended it to their friend, and then it spread by word of mouth and no one ever tried to bead with any other brand. LOL! I'm sure people have had fireline tear on them before in history. They just won't admit it.^^

My name is Chrissie, and I am 19. I'm not in school anymore, I graduated highschool and am still job hunting for something decent (Which is nothing, LOL.)

I love animals, I have 7 cats, 1 dog, 1 bunny,1 bearded dragon, 3 hampsters, and 3 (Soon to be 4) sugar gliders. They are my life, I love them all so much! And well, the BF too of course hehe. His name is Shane, and we have been together for 6 years now.

I just started beading. I was googling animal bead patterns, and ended up finding your site! It's so nice of you to have patterns for everyone to see, and I hope one day I have patterns for you to add! At first the patterns looked hard and i never thought I would figure any of them out but i have!I made my first 3-D animal at the beginning of the week. I love making the animals! (Of course, hehe!) I've made 2 cats, 3 birds, and 1 pig, and part of a heart so far. I mentioned in another thread that I give them to my glider to play with! (Only the biggest 8mm sizes, though!) It's so cute watching her swing from her pig, Lol!

Thanks again for having a great site!

Wow, that's amazing! You know, I'd never even heard of a bearded dragon or a sugar glider! Are you in Australia by any chance? They are amazing animals, wow! I never even heard of the North American flying squirrel until I happened to read about them in the articles about sugar gliders. That's just incredible. They are nocturnal though, does that keep you up at night? LOL!

Hehe, I'm glad your pets like playing with the beaded animals!! If you have a picture of them playing, be sure to post it here, I'm sure everyone would love to see it!!

REALLY? Wow! Nope, I live in Florida. Yes, they are nocturnal. I actually stay up a lot of nights to play with her! (My SG's name is Zira.) They are awesome pets, for the right people. They take lots of time. If anyone would like to read more about them heres a great site for info; glidercentral.net

If anyone would like to see pictures of my glider, Zira, here is my Photobucket! Password is; Zirarocks http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v155/DarkAngel111788/ (I also have a pic of the beardie under the animals album, his name is Bowser!) Theres not a picture of her playing with it in there yet, but maybe i can catch her in the act! Shes so fast, and sometimes hard to get pictures of..Especially if i get in the cage with her, she likes playing with me instead hehe.

If anyone has questions to ask me, feel free! ^^

WOW, she's too cute!!! I especially love the shots of her being held in your hands and being fed. Does she scratch or is she totally gentle
That is one massive cage, lucky her!! I just assumed you were in Australia because they're a native species of Australia. But your climate down there in Florida must be pretty inviting too! Here in Canada, it's freezing!!

Well anything with claws scratches, hehe. But only when shes crawling all over me, or hanging upside down on my arm really lol. She also nibbles sometimes if i taste like food, lol. Shes pretty much a sweety though! Likes to just hang out in my shirt and cuddle with me. ^^ Glad you like her! Shes so fun to watch jumping around and gliding, hehe.
