I need some help

by Dawn, Sunday, February 08, 2009, 12:08

Okay, so if you read about me you know that I mostly do beaded ornament covers, but I love doing 3D RAW as a kind of break. Anyway, it has been brought to my attention that I don't charge enough for my ornaments. I was looking for some feedback from you guys. Like I said I am an award winning designer so some people think I should charge more for just that reason. They also say that I will sell more at a higher price because I appear to value it more....Anyone agree/disagree/have any opinion? Check out my work again at

I charge $20 USD for each ornament.
Let me know what you all think!
Thanks,
Dawn

I need some help

I have a hard time pricing my items too because I want to be fair and not overcharge/undercharge. My mom suggested that I start with the cost of supplies and add on what I feel my time is worth as an hourly rate. I think this is fair for the most part. It evens out as some things have more expensive supplies but work up quickly and other things I do from just seed beads take much longer to make. I have made a few ornament covers and I would say you are not charging enough for them.

That would work except each of my items takes about 5 hours to make. They are all equal in time and materials. I priced them all the same for that reason. Is the price too high? too low? I don't know especially in the economic climate in the US these days.

I think your prices are definitely too low.
Just taking into account the amount of time spent on each one you are currently valuing your time at $4 p/h and thats before considering materials!

I would certainly raise your prices.
Also, you should mention on your page how long it takes to make one, since anybody who DID complain about a higher price would most likely only be complaining if they didn't know how much time and effort was involved!

I hope thats some help at least!

Okay..so it seems I am too low...I kinda thought so, but I wanted to make things affordable. How much would you (anybody) charge per hour on a piece?

I would say mark them up, but write that the price is negotiable, and then you can get the big spenders and the not so big spenders. I would say a fair rate for artwork is $10/hour (and that's the low end), so you would charge $50, but then add $10 for materials and shipping. Then to make it look cheaper, make your price $59.97 instead of $60. It makes all the difference in mentality. Now if the market is good, you'll just sell them, but if the market is bad, people will try to negotiate, and they aren't likely to lowball the price down to 20, so you'll be making more than now either way.
