Beading Club!

by Sarah, Thursday, January 29, 2009, 05:33

I'm a year 12 student in Wales, UK, starting up a beading club for younger students. I have some simple 2D patterns for them to make, but am running out fast. Any ideas on fairly simple 3D projects that I could give to 12/13 year old girls? thanks

Hi!!! Look, I've been selling beaded stuff in my school, and many love the things. Girls of 13/12 years old love the 3D hello kitty, you can make those of many different colours, and you can even try to invent something. The 3D birds are also cute to put on cellphones and girls will love it. Well, hope I helped! :-)

Hi Sarah i'm in Wales too. What part are you from?

I think starting with some basic right angle weave patterns might be a good way to start since its not quite as confusing as a 3d pattern but still uses the same techniques.
Making a bracelet or something similar would appeal to 12/13 year old girls and would let them get used to the technique before having to follow a strict pattern which doesnt allow for any mistakes.
After that i'd suggest trying Celeste's cube pattern on the guest patterns page. They only take about 30 minutes to make and are quite simple so they won't allow the girls to get too frustrated and also wont take long enough that they start getting restless :-)

I hope that helps a bit :-)

Beading Club!

Hi Lucy, I'm in Newport, so fairly near the coast in Wales.
At the moment, I'm getting them to work throught the patterns that I've got from a book with lots of 2D animals and things, so we're working with wire a lot, so i don't think that making jewelery would be the best idea for them. The Hello Kitty is a really good idea though, might tell them to only make one side to start with.

Thanks for the ideas!

Wow, thats cool! I'm in Cardiff so not far at all from you :-)

Also if you are still looking for ideas beaded beads might be nice since they are fast and versatile :-)
The 3d balls in the ball bracelet on the Jewely page of this site can make really cute beads when made individually.

Beaded beads can also make good practise for starting peyote stitch if you ever decide to introduce that at your club

I just wanted to add something to Lucy's ball idea.... :-)
The beaded balls from the beaded ball necklace pattern can also be made into footballs if you use black and white beads instead. (So on the pattern/diagram itself, the small pink beads would be black and the larger blue beads would be white).

Hope that helps!

For all you non-British beaders, I think Laura is referring to soccer balls, lol. But that is a very cool idea!
