Now that we can post pictures on here, I thought it would be fun to have a thread for the work we have done from Allegra's patterns. I just finished the small cat for my son. This is my first successful attempt at RAW and I will say for the future, 8MM beads are just a little bit small! [image] I am also going to put the pics up at my flickr account. My flickr album

Hey Jax, that's so cute! What does RAW mean, by the way? I must be excessively dumb since these are supposed to be my patterns. LOL! :-P
8mm beads sound like pretty big beads! Are you sure about that? Or am I totally being dumb again?

Thought I'd add my 2 hearts as well. I made them both into phone charms too. The first is the heart pattern available on the site and the second orange heart is the same pattern but using the same size beads (instead of 2 different sizes).

RAW is right angle weave. The circles of beads done with 2 needles like in your patterns. And don't feel bad, I have no clue when it comes to beading terms. I google words on patterns and am like oh ok I know what that is I do it but I don't call it that! I don't know if the beads are 8mm or 8 something else, they are just labeled with size 8 japenesse seed beads at the store, I guess I am just assuming that they are in mm's. I will have to find out next time I go in.

Jax, I think the beads you're using are called size 8/0 and I use them too (you say 'eight-aught'). They actually measure 2.5mm across. The standard seed bead sizes are 6/0, 8/0, 9/0, 10/0, 11/0, 13/0, 14/0 and 15/0 (in order of decreasing size).

Thanks for your kind comments :-)

Laura, I forgot to ask you. Where did you get those things that you attached to your beading patterns? The thing that you hang them with. I can't find those things anywhere. Is it hard to attach them?

The straps that I bought were called charm lariats and I got them off ebay quite cheaply.

I don't know what the '0' part of '8/0' is supposed to mean - only that you say 'aught'

Oooh, I found a guide to seed bead sizes on the internet (boy was it hard to find though, you would think there would be better tutorial sites out there!), and it said that the ranges of seed bead size are size 6 (largest) to size 15 (smallest), and the size 6 seed beads are also referred to as E-beads.

The size 6 seed beads fit 6 beads per inch, and the size 15 fit 15 beads per inch, hence the naming system.

The size 6 seed beads measure about 4mm, the size 8 seed beads measure 3mm, the size 11 seed beads measure 2.2mm and the size 15 seed beads measure 1.5 mm (according to that website).

So as Laura pointed out, people use the nomenclature of "6/0", "11/0", etc to refer to the sizes. I don't know what the "/0" is for. LOL! Do you know Laura?

Thanks for the info Laura and Allegra, I normally work with 11/0 so I am just getting familiar with what else is out there. Allegra, I have some of those too, I got them really cheap at walmart and they are really easy to use. I found them in the jewelry section. Some of the jewelry stores on line call them cell phone lanyards. Putting them on something is like putting a key on a key ring. Unless I am doing it wrong and there is an easier way!

I love the mouse he is so cute. And the hearts too, esp the purple and green one my favorite colors. Allegra, I don't know of any software for you to make the patterns but I can't wait for the new ones. I finally took my family into Chinatown in San Francisco a few weeks ago and found a little store with a few beaded items in the window. They had the coolest dragon but it was me and my luck so of course, the store was closed and I couldn't find any hours posted on the door. I am planning a trip back really soon to see if I can catch her open.

LOL!!! I hope you find her open! I'm frankly surprised that a store in Chinatown would be closed. I find that, at least in Toronto, Chinatown is always open, even all-day long on statutory holidays, full hours on weekends, and loooong hours! They open at 9am and close at 9pm usually! Long after the Canadian store owners have gone home. Anyways, I totally agree with you that Tess's pink and green heart is the prettiest!! I keep trying to get her to take more pictures of it!! Tess, if you're out there, someone agrees!

This is probably completely off-topic, but I admire the way that the squares in your pictures are all perfectly the same size Monii. You must be a photoshop connoisseur! The beading patterns are great too, LOL! The colours you used for the pig are outstanding.

Again, I'm so sorry to everyone for the site's server going down repeatedly this past week. My boyfriend and I are now switching to a more reliable server. Hopefully all issues will be resolved. I'm sorry that this has prevented me from updating the site in the past week or more. Soon we will be on the new server!

Hey you remember last week when I told you I was trying to make a frog and was so frustrated that all I managed to make was a ball? Well the ball grew legs and a head finally, just not the frog I was aiming for!

[image][image][image]

What do you think? Maybe a little long on the legs? And I wish I could get him to stand up on them, maybe I should have used wire for the legs?

It's not too late!! Just string wire through the existing beads and bend it so that the spider can stand up. I did that for my poodle (which will eventually finish being posted LOL!). I made him with beads at first, and he refused to stand. So then I went back through the same beads with wire. I didn't have to remove any of the original fishing line.

The legs are just the right length. I covered part of them with my hands to see, and it looked a bit like the skull on bones symbol with shorter legs.

Make a pattern out of him!!

I had some long head pins I was using the other day and kept the pieces that were left over (for what at the time I had no clue but I thought they might come in handy someday). Perfect fit. He still won't stand, I think the body is just to heavy but I think he looks way more realistic and I can use fishing line to hang him up at my desk.

LMAO, yes, you took the risk to show me your beadwork and paid the price. LOL!! But that's so cool that you invented a pattern. Very few people can say that. And it really looks just like a spider, especially now that the legs have dimension. Great job!!!

You don't have to redo it with pictures if you can make diagrams of all the different parts of him. I think it would be easier. Taking pictures is a long and excrutiatingly boring process (not the act of taking the pictures, but editing them later to the right size, and adding arrows on top and what not). Diagrams is the way of the future! LOL.

What was the program you did the poodle in? Maybe I can try that. It is fairly simple to do just two round balls put together then the legs. I think that would be a good way to get my feet wet with the software.

Technically I used adobe illustrator to make the poodle diagram. But you can just as easily use inkscape. Just follow my inkscape tutorial. It will tell you exactly what to do and then some. And if you want to do something that isn't covered in the tutorial, look it up in the inkscape help file that comes with the program. That is how I learned to use the program anyway! LOL!

Here is an example of a tutorial I am in the process of making using inkscape (diagrams on that page were made using inkscape):

Beaded Sun Circle Bracelet Pattern

Looks just as good as adobe illustrator!
Good luck with the pattern. It's actually fun to make diagrams. Much more fun that taking pictures. So that is another plus of diagrams, that they are not painful to make, but quite the contrary (with pictures, it was like "Kill me now; why am I doing this again?" LOL)

And you have made a beading diagram before! The beaded snowflake earrings!

Oh right, that's what you meant. I tried Google Sketch Up once for a few minutes. It seems to have potential but it's quite difficult to coordinate 3 dimensions. I was able to draw a bunch of spheres (for beads), but it was so hard to get them to go in the right positions! I will have to spend a lot more time learning how to use that program. It's not quite "ready" for the beading world yet. LOL!

These are so fun to make!! So far I've made...3 of the birds (Guest pattern), 2 beaded cats ( 1 black and white, based off of my own kitty named Shadow lol, 1 orange and white), one pig, and part of a heart (I ran out of red beads, hehe.)

Wanna know the funny thing? I give these to my pet! My sugar glider. Since the beads are so close together, she doesnt try to chew it apart, and its so funny watching her jump on the pig! Lol. I'm actually slowly trying to make my own pattern for a sugar glider...Making your own patterns is hard, I have NO idea how you do it! Lol.

Anywho I'm having fun, I'll post pictures of my things in the future, I'll line them all up one day! Hopefully I'll have some of my own patterns and I can send those in too to share, since you have shared with everyone.

Oh Thank you Celeste, that's so sweet! Wow I never thought of making beaded animals as toys for a kitty!! I'm glad she likes them!! That's a totally inspirational idea. Especially if you use big plastic beads to make a big model. (I wouldn't use small seed beads in case of choking hazard!) Good job!

Good luck making your pattern!! I know it's hard. What helps is to try to map out the beads on paper first without arrows or bead numbers. That always helps me!

Sorry I had to change your font color from orange to purple. I was having trouble reading it. I hope you like purple! This Christmas, I'm going to allow people to join the forum if they want to, and that way you can edit your own posts after posting them. I deactivated joining because I thought it would annoy people, but I can just make it optional for anyone who wants to "belong" hehe! I can also reactivate email reply notifications. Another trick, is that you can stiffen them by painting with clear nail polish, or dipping them in floor polish. You can even them out just before they're fully dry.
