Choosing my bracelet colors...help!

by Allegra ⌂ @, Toronto, Canada, Wednesday, January 07, 2009, 19:37

Okay I'm horribly indecisive, and usually spend half the time of making a bracelet in choosing the colours. This is a new pattern I just made up on paper. It's a variation of the elastic caterpillar bracelet, but it's doubled, and on the two outer sides, instead of having the medium sized beads, I put one large bead. Hope you recognize it! Now I have to choose a colour for the beads that form the X shape over the large bead. I drew a diagram in inkscape to help me pick, and I've ruled out pink, purple, and blue that way, but I can't decide between gold, green, and shiny translucent white. Here's my diagrams:

Choose the best colour for the bracelet! I can't decide!

I should mention the types of beads I'm using so you can visualize it better. The diagrams don't show shine very well lol. The large green beads are very shiny glass semi-translucent emerald coloured beads. They are very pretty because they are made in a special way, where the glass inside the bead is kind of broken into pieces so you can see the light reflecting off it in different directions. But then the outside is totally smooth and spherical. Each bead is about 6mm in diameter. The medium "white" beads are not really white, they are diamond-coloured seed beads. They really sparkle for seed beads. They are not translucent, because the inside of them is lined with silver paint. They are size 8/0 seed beads by the looks of it. The little beads are all size 11/0 seed beads. They are all shiny and sparkly. The white 11/0 beads are very translucent. The green and gold are not translucent. The gold is a bit yellowy in real life. Okay hopefully that will help with the visual!

I like the top colors based on the diagram. Can you take a picture of the actual beads and post them for us, that would really help us decide what one looks best. Oh by the way I am posting a pic of my poodle here in a few minutes!

Okay, you're really making me work for my bracelet hehe.

This is a picture of the beads in their containers. The white beads to the left of the green ones are the diamond-like shiny size 8/0 seed beads, not the translucent ones. Those are shown in the next picture. The container with the multicoloured beads contains the gold ones. You can sort of see some of the gold beads in it. Obviously, the big green 6mm round beads are the big green beads from the diagram. And the small green seed beads are also shown.

And this is a picture of the beads laid out individually. The beads in the container on the side are the small white translucent ones. I didn't want to take them out because they jump everywhere and you wouldn't be able to tell them from the diamond-like size 8/0 seed beads that are sitting individually beside the green round beads. It's hard to see white beads in a photo, sorry about that. Hopefully this will give you a sense of what the beads look like!

I like the diamond-like shiny beads. I think they are called silver silver-lined seed beads. Most of my seed beads are silver-lined as I really like the effect the give.
So that's another vote for the top diagram in your original post ;-)

By the way, I just sent you the apple instructions :-D

I know, I just got your apple pattern instructions. Your diagrams are impeccable! They look hands down professional. I like how your last diagram has the arrow going around and behind a bead. I was thinking "holy crap" 'cause it blows my diagrams out of the water LOL. OH and what about the 2nd diagram with the white shaded beads to show they are below the top ones. I was totally blown away. I can't wait for everyone else to see what I saw!

You guys really think having more white is better? Does white go well with green? I was kind of leaning towards the middle one the more I look at it. I guess I can make the base and then post a picture of that and maybe you'll change your minds LOL. The small beads on top are the last step anyway.
But if anyone else has any advice, please share! I was born without a sense of colour matching. LOL! My mom always says my clothes don't match at all.

With the bracelet, I guess it depends which beads you want to stand out. The green seed beads might make the bigger green beads stand out less, then again the silver/diamond beads might take away from the fact that it's supposed to be a green bracelet. I think you'll only be able to tell once you've threaded a few together, so yeah, it might be better to post a few pics once you've made a start.

By the way, I'm going to bed now, lol, it's 00.40 here :-)

Thanks :-) Although, yours are just as good!

I thought the 'thread behind the bead' might be a bit confusing but if you think it's good then that's great!
You did a similar thing to the fading in your poodle pattern didn't you? I thought it would help when visualising how the shape comes together as 3D.
Well we'll have to see how everyone gets on with it.

I vote white or gold...Just make one of each, lol! Where did you get that container, btw? I have a horrible time finding good containers that are closable and BIG...I always find teeny tiny ones that hold like 20 beads, lol. right now i use tackle box styled holders, haha.

LOL, you guys have funny taste! I was so convinced green would be the best one. Well, it's okay, I'm actually done the bottom part (the backbone with the medium white beads and the large green crystal beads). So I'm gonna take a picture of it and then I'm gonna do a couple of X's with the three colours (white, green, and gold) and we'll have a better idea of what looks best. LOL!

Awesome! Well, I just dont like green..so, thats probably why i didnt say green, lol. I would have made mine like, black and blue, or black and purple or something. I make everything black or white so it matches easily, I hate having to color coordinate, lol!

Actually my first instinct was to make it with these blue and purple mixed beads (same as the emerald ones, but half blue and half purple kind of fused together, they remind me of outer space), but when I saw the green ones, they looked like genuine emeralds, whereas the other ones looked like manufactured beads LOL! So I went with the green for my first try. But I'll make another one with those other beads too!

Celeste, most of the stuff I make is black and white or black and silver too! I hate making a piece and not being able to wear it because it doesn't match my outfit.

Haha, or you could be like me and just wear it anyway, even if it clashes horribly.

Lol! Well, I wear a lot of black. It's a mixture of being far to lazy to try and color coordinate things, and, because its just one of my favorite colors. I usually make everything in black and white! I LOVE the silver lined seed beads...Got some for my birthday, just havent been able to use them yet! I promised to make Shane a dragon with the blue ones I got..hes still waiting on that dragon, lol. He posted a comment on the snowman pattern as Khellendros..I guess thats what i get for showing it to him =P
