xmas trees

by Jen Lawson, Wednesday, December 31, 2008, 15:49

I'm curious about when people put up and take down their trees in different countries. I live in Australia and have a Russian mother and Lithuanian father. We grew up putting the xmas tree up on xmas eve, opening the presents on xmas day, but then leaving the tree up till around 7th January, which also happens to be russian orthodox xmas. It wasn't until I was an adult that I realised it was also the 12 days of xmas we kept it up for. I've come to a compromise as an adult, with my own daughter, and we put it up around 2 weeks into Dec. But here in Australian families a lot of them feel it's bad luck to put it up after 1st of Dec, and they definitely take it down before new year!, some even late xmas day! I'm just wondering, how is it done in other countries?

I thought in Australia, it's summer right now (or Spring?) So you guys still celebrate Christmas in December even though it's not winter there? In Canada, we're pretty secular so people usually put up all their lights and trees in early December and take them down in early January. It's more about not wasting all your efforts in putting them up LOL. I know the radio stations all start playing Christmas music in late November, which is kind of annoying lol.

Oh yeah. It's summer here now. We have hot xmas's! They're usually at the BBQ, because it's often so hot. Sometimes xmas day can even be in the 40's Celsius! But sometimes it's cooler. Actually that's in the south of Australia, up north it's much hotter. Here's a link for some aussie xmas songs that really describe xmas in australia. http://users.ecs.soton.ac.uk/pm/Christmas/auscarol.html
