My newest beading projects

by Allegra ⌂ @, Toronto, Canada, Tuesday, December 30, 2008, 21:59

Hi guys, I just wanted to show you the new pieces I've made. I've been busy beading during my Christmas break!

This is a hair comb done in ladder stitch:

This hair comb (or should I say crown!) is done in right angle weave:

This bracelet is made in right angle weave for the backing and stringing for the front:

Yes, I admit the pearls were photoshopped to look sharp and pretty hehe. It actually looks better in the picture than in real life. Photoshop never ceases to amaze me. Anyways, I'll be adding these babies to the jewelry page and my never-ending pattern to-do list.

You're probably wondering (or well, if you care) why I keep making hair combs and not hair clips like most normal people would. I used to wear hair clips but once I discovered combs, I haven't gone back. My hair is too smooth to hold clips, they always fall out, and they hurt more too! Combs sit faithfully on top of my head all day long. But only the kind with thin teeth. The ones with really fat teeth fall right out of my hair. Anyways, I'm rambling now...

I love the combs. I have the same problem with clips, the little ones that hold hurt and the big ones always fall out. I will have to try the combs. Plus the beading looks awesome on the combs!

The combs are amazing, I will never go back to clips. I tried so many different kinds and they all had problems. Yeah, you're right that the small ones do hold better but they hurt, and then they hardly hold any hair so what's the point. I like the versatility of the comb as well. You can hold it on your crown area, to pull back your hair directly above your head, or you can put it on the side to side sweep your hair. You can even put two combs, one on each side to pull back your hair on both sides with a center part. I hope that makes sense. It takes a bit of learning to be able to use them though. You don't put them in like you would comb your hair. They would surely fall out. You put them so the teeth face forward, against the "flow" of your hair. What I usually do is pull up my hair with my hands into a pony tail type of thing on top of my head (the front of your hair at the crown), hold that tail against the top of my head, then insert the comb with the teeth facing forwards into the body of the tail of hair. I hope that makes sense. I don't use the combs with the fat teeth. Those are for the back of your head to hold all your hair together in a bun. I don't like things that go behind your head as much 'cause I wear stuff in my hair to make myself feel nice, so I can see it in the mirror. Not so other people can see it when I have my head turned away from them! And putting the fat teethed-combs in your hair is a much harder technique and much more painful lol. And if it falls out, you don't see it falling 'cause it's behind you. Anyways, I'm rambling now. Make sure you buy combs with the teeth looking exactly like the ones in my pictures. I buy all mine at the dollar store. I wonder if I can find pictures of how to wear a comb in your hair. I could always take pictures of myself if I can't find any lol.

Hehe, good luck getting anything for free on the internet. All the sites selling combs said the instructions came with the comb in the mail LOL! I finally found this one picture of a girl wearing a comb in her hair. This is my favourite way of wearing it. You can't see the teeth, but they are facing the front of her hair.

For the sake of completeness, this is the type of comb you should not get. The teeth are very fat, and there are no grooves within the teeth to catch hair with. This type of comb is used for the back of the hair, to hold your entire head of hair in a bun, in a very complex and painful procedure lol.

I didn't think you could buy hair combs anymore. I thought they went 'out' of fashion a long time ago. Maybe it's gone right around and they're coming back in again. I never keep up with the fashions that well. They look great though.

Haha, leave it to me to be out of wack with the fashion industry. Maybe this is the best time to stock up on them, when no one else wants them!

I saw some cool things the other day on TV. They were like combs but they had elastic bands connecting them so you could stretch them and place them in your hair. They looked pretty cool and they looked beadable but I can't remember what they were called.

I think I found them Jax! We could definitely make them. If only I can find some combs, I haven't seen any for years. http://www.nashua.net.au/page1.php and http://www.hairzing.com/what-is-hairzing.php

Forgot to say, try checking walmart, and if not, some dollar stores in your area. Worst case scenario, I bet you could get a large bag full of combs on the net.

We don't have walmart here is australia, but we have other similar stores. I don't remember ever seeing them, but I haven't really looked either. I'll look next time I go shopping.
