African necklace - help needed!
Hello beaders!
My mom has this beautiful beaded necklace, which she bought in south-africa over 30 years ago. The thread is pretty fragile and therefore she want me to duplicate the necklace - without cutting it apart to look how it was done, of course ;)
I'm not a beginner anymore but unfortunately I rarely make necklaces/bracelets so I can't figure out how it was done, nor how many threads they used.
It would be great if someone could give me a clue and/or tell me how this stitch is called. :) Any help is appreciated!

Andrea, the method is netting, I don't know if I can describe it properly, but if you google netting with beads tutroials, there'll be plenty of help out there.

Hi Andrea
This is a Zulu Beaded necklace. The Zulu's have their own way of beading and use techniques that are not in any books and you will not find their actual techniques in any books either. Diana Fitzgerald has a beading book where she has tried to duplicate their methods of beading.
Hope this explains why the necklace technique used for your mothers necklace looks foreign.

Thank you so much for your help! Both replies helped me a lot. :)
Vanessa, I found the book on amazon and I'll ask my mom if she want me to buy it.
(Anyway, maybe I'll find a way on my own to make a similar necklace. Already tried to scribble a pattern on a sheet of paper... ^^)

It looks to me like a type of netting called Saraguro. You can google that and you will find some information.

The necklace on the left, the earrings and the bracelet , were all made using the same technique as the necklace here. These items are made with very small beads, they could be a 15. These I bought as a gift. I have lived in South Africa for 40 years and the other years in Zimbabwe, and my family that are left here all live in Kwa Zulu Natal, the Land of the Zulu People. I have watched the Zulu people beading for years and I can spot a Zulu piece of beading as soon as I see it. They have their own Techniques they use for beading.
I hope this puts this necklace Technique question to rest.

African Bead and Wire Sculpting. Also made locally and no books on how to do it. Each Artist has his own Techniques he uses to make them, it is a craft mainly done by males.
Export Companies advertise these all over the internet for overseas buyers. The WOW Export company mentioned here at the Forum with the motor bikes are also very popular and so are the wire cars.
